The Heart Behind the Blog
Hello and welcome to A Reel Treat!
The Heart Behind the Blog
I’m so glad you’ve stopped into my cozy little corner of the internet where heritage, hospitality, and homemade goodness meet!
If we were in person right now, I’d probably offer you a warm shortbread cookie (think Cranberry Orange or Pecan Shortbread cookies…) and a cuppa coffee and jump right into asking how your day has been!
Since we can’t quite do that, I just want to let you know you’re always welcome here and I can’t wait to share what I’ve learned over the years with you here on this blog and give you a little bit of the backstory behind it!
A Reel Treat – the space for those who believe that love is baked into the little things!
The inspiration behind naming my blog came from the warm, lovely feeling of being welcomed into someone’s home and how it feels like a real treat to be with them, enjoying the gracious host(s) and all the preparations they made for your stay.
As well as a play on words, tying in my love for Scottish Highland Dancing, with a ‘reel’ referring to a four person dance (one of my favorites of the Highland dances). Not to mention a real treat of any kind is something special, maybe unexpected, and generally very welcomed! Queue any sweet treat your taste buds desire!
So for me, it’s a real treat to share my culture by dancing a reel, it’s a real treat to make time to bake a little, sweet something, as well as a real treat to host friends and loved ones any chance we get!
So it’s a reel treat for me to welcome you here to grow on your journey of finding peace and cultivating the ambiance you are wanting your home to exude!
Growing up, we had overnight, weekend guests throughout the year for various events. There was always a hustle and bustle around the soon-arriving guests and an occasional hiccup here and there, but once they arrived, focus was directed from cleaning and last minute details to our guests and welcoming them with hugs and lots of catching up! And so many of the BEST memories I have are connected to either hosting our friends/family for a weekend or being hosted by friends/family!
Baking and my love for it came from learning from my mom in the kitchen. Watching, ever questioning the why, and getting to make tiny versions of whatever mom was making… mini pizza, mini loaf of bread, etc. Talk about cute.. I still love watching ingredients become something not only pretty to look at but also delicious to eat!
Growing up in a home where dad played the bagpipes and competed in pipe bands like Chattanooga Pipes and Drums and Knoxville Pipes and Drums, we learned about our cultural roots at a very young age and it was inspiring to me that we could still appreciate and participate in the thrill and beauty of cultural customs from long ago! My sisters and I started Scottish Highland Dance lessons from a world champion 45 minutes from us, after telling my dad, “I want to do that!” when watching dancers in amazement at the Gatlinburg Highland Games (now Smoky Mountain Scottish Festival and Games) and that set me on the path towards teaching and opening my dance school!
So that’s what gave me a fire to keep these customs from my ancestors alive even today!
My inspiration for starting this blog came from my curiosity around others not having a similar experience and the desire to reintroduce the art of hospitality, the heart of baking and also to remind you that embracing your culture is something worthy of appreciation.
Whether you’re planning a themed dinner, baking with your kids, or trying to make your home feel more welcoming – I hope you’ll find some encouragement and joy here!
Here’s an idea I’d like to leave you with:
Extending love through intentional living.
If things aren’t necessarily modeled to us, they must be learned. And sometimes it doesn’t take much to learn!
So think of this space as inspiration for living intentionally and learning how to extend love (even when you aren’t ‘feeling’ it).

Welcome to A Reel Treat: The Heart Behind the Blog
Hi friend, and welcome! I’m so glad you’ve found your way here to A Reel Treat — my little corner of the internet where heritage, hospitality, and homemade goodness meet.
This blog was born from two loves that have shaped so much of my life: the joy of Scottish Highland dance and the delight of baking for others. The name “A Reel Treat” is a nod to the reel — a lively, traditional Scottish dance full of movement, connection, and joy — and the “treat” that comes from a plate of something delicious shared around the table. Together, they capture my heart for blending tradition, warmth, and the simple pleasures that make life sweet.
Why I Started This Blog
For me, hospitality isn’t about perfection — it’s about creating a space where people feel seen, cared for, and welcomed just as they are. Whether it’s a batch of scones fresh from the oven or a cozy gathering in the living room, I believe these little moments of connection are where life’s real treasures are found.
Through A Reel Treat, I want to share:
- Baking 101 tips to help you feel confident in the kitchen, even if you’ve never been taught
- Scottish heritage spotlights that celebrate culture, tradition, and family stories
- Hospitality how-tos that make guests feel truly cherished
- Simple homemaking rhythms to bring peace and beauty into everyday life
